OUR FRIENDS

ammo-bannerContemporary jewellery from Cambodia

ammo4Ammo is an exciting new brand of women and men’s jewellery, hand-made in Cambodia. The collection uses recycled brass bullets and sterling silver, and has been designed by founder – Madeline Green.

Originally from the UK, she is now based in the vibrant and creative hub of Cambodia – Siem Reap, which is home to the UNESCO world heritage temples of Angkor Wat.

Whilst exploring the town, Madeline met two Khmer jewellers, who work for the social enterprise – Saomao. Run by Marie Hill, the shop supports Cambodian crafts people, and sells unique and unusual wares including hand woven silks, and contemporary jewellery. For more information – see the website: http://www.saomao.com/

ammo-peopleWatching and learning their traditional techniques, Madeline has been learning Khmer and teaching English, and swopping skills and ideas from the western world where she studied and worked as a jeweller over the last 17 years.

Using foot powered bellows, gasoline, hand-made soldering torches and a smelting pot, its a far cry from the world of a modern European workshop, but essentially the techniques are the basics of how all metal is worked and fashioned into wearable pieces today.

Possibly as a throwback from the post Khmer Rouge period in Cambodia’s history, the process of using scrap metal, re-working and recycling it for a second life is quite common in the country. What fascinates Madeline is the way in which a material such as a cold, hard bullet, can be transformed into a wearable, feminine or masculine piece of jewellery.

ammo3The Ammo collection is the result of months of sketches, ideas, and a dream come true for this UK designer. Not only does she get to spend her time making jewellery, but Madeline is now working alongside Saomao on markets and retail.
She is also employing a young Khmer man, who cycles 15km each week (with only one leg!) to learn and help her make lots of contemporary bullet jewellery…

WATCH THIS SPACE – bullets with silk cocoon designs coming soon!
